Aviation Insights - SAF closing the gap between new and previous technology aircraft

Deploying SAF can help previous technology aircraft level up with the new and more fuel-efficient aircraft – at a cost.

New technology aircraft consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions than the previous technology. The previous technology aircraft may level up and become as green as the newer technology by using additional SAF to offset the CO2 emissions resulting from the extra fuel consumption.

Deploying SAF can help previous technology aircraft level up with the new and more fuel-efficient aircraft – but at what cost? Under certain assumptions, the annual cost of SAF used to offset CO2 emissions between new and previous technology aircraft is estimated at approximately $1 million for single-aisle aircraft and more than $2 million for twin-aisle aircraft.
